We love the sites, not the smell…. Or really the food.

Rome has been a bit of a challenge.  Our arrival was greeted by the unfortunately and extremely strong smell of urine in the slightly dodgy feeling streets – expectations lowered.

Two blocks down our lovely hotel upgraded us to a beautiful room and let us check in early – expectations exceeded.  We grabbed a wquicl lunch at a little family restaurant next door and set out to explore some ancient things.  Which we found.  In plethora.  Expectations exceeded! The only drawback being that it was exceptionally hot.  38+ hard to find shade and a fair walk to all we wanted to see.  Expectations given heat stroke.

Late in the evening totally worn out we popped down at a highly rated restaurant we saw on trip advisor – expectations high.  Good bread okay staff faded to mediocre food and slow service – expectations not so met.

Home we went.  The second day in Rome we woke up early for a before the crowds tour of the Vatican museums.  3 hours cover in the Sistine chapel, St. Peter’s basilica and Raphels room plus heaps of frecos and the statue/sculpture collection.  Amazing.  We have to go back.  We ran out of time but will definitely return to re see and redo everything.

The afternoon was spent at the coliseum and Palentine hill.  There at no words for the excitement and amazing-ness of these ancient structures.  I love this stuff.  Maybe I should have been an archeologist.

Back to the hotel with tired feet and WD had slightly better luck at another local restaurant for dinner.

Now off to Stuttgart! Ciao Italia, we have loved you.
