When I was younger my mother gave me a book of conversation starters – this would have been exceptionally helpful if they weren’t completely stupid. There were lines in there like “Question – If you had to spread yourself with butter, where would you choose to spread it and why?” Although perhaps an interesting line of questioning it always seemed to invoke slightly less than appropriate commentary or just quizical and slightly concerned looks. Not a good conversation starter at all actually; and the book was filled with these and worse!
There was however one question which I did find interesting and have carried with me through the years:
“If you could be any inanimate object what would you be and why?”
I love this question, the answers people have given me over the years are amazing, thoughtful and actually seem to give a pretty accurate representation of their values and character. Answers range from a beach, a violin, a clock, a spatula, an egg slicer and even a pillow.
I myself would answer: A Yellow Crayon (thus the title)
Yellow Crayons are such happy objects, they are the colour of happy things like the sun or flowers or lemonade, and they have the ability to create things and give joy to people – children in particular.
The first thing people say when I tell them I’d like to be a yellow crayon is “you’d get chewed on” ….it’s a good point.
Anyway, the reason I’m telling you this is because I want to explain the reason for creating this blog. You see I currently have the pleasure of finding myself and embarking on the rest of my life. I am actually that yellow crayon – drawing out my own future one job application at a time.
The back story isn’t too important but in short I grew up in the states, have a degree in Media Studies (Comms) from the Unviersity of British Columbia in Canada, am working on my Masters at the University of Queensland in Australia and right before the Christmas holiday I quit my job. I was working at a company doing a variety of things and was really good, but I wasn’t happy. What I realized is that this is the time in my life when I get to decide what I’d like my world to look like. This is when things are flexible and why shouldn’t I do something I want to do in an industry I want to be in? See I plan on making a difference and well, I’m not going to achieve that goal if I’m not doing something that drives me to do more.
So, in the middle of a recession I’ve quit my job and started the search to find myself, a job and my future. It’s gonna be a wild ride, and with Yellow Crayon in hand I’m ready to start drawing in my future.
